GALLIFORMES: Megapodiidae
Alectura lathami
The large nesting mounds that these birds build can be up to four meters in length and a metre high.
After the male has copulated with the female, he allows her to deposit eggs into his nest. Then he chases her away.
It is likely however, that the eggs he is incubating are not his own.
The male does not care for the young once they hatch. The chicks dig themselves out of the nest and are able to fly within an hour.
